Concrete cancer is a process of corrosion in concrete and typically involves either chlorides (Salt) or carbon dioxide reducing the alkalinity of the cement paste around the steel bars inside the concrete. There are however other items that can cause corrosion in concrete i.e. hydrogen sulphide corrosion.

The alkalinity of the cement is one of the main items protecting the steel bars from rusting. As concrete ages these agents can reduce the alkalinity which in turn causes the steel bars to oxidise and expand causing the concrete to crack. If this does occur the repair is slow and expensive as the affected concrete needs to be removed, the steel bars grit blasted and coated with a cold galvanising agent and the cement replaced.

A survey is carried out identifying the following.

• Likely sources of corrosion: To do this cored samples are taken of the concrete and advice can be used which maps the concrete cover over the steel bars.
• Compressive and tensile testing of the concrete is also carried out.

A repair specification can be outlined, including a budget with costings to repair the structure.

A maintenance schedule can also be identified to stop the corrosion from occurring again.
The remedial repair specifications can be written for the corrosion control on steel structures, industrial floor coatings, pressure grouting, general building works, all aspects of active and passive fireproofing, jointing, waterproof membranes, concrete repair solutions, occupational health and safety products and services.

Clerks of works
Property Protect can be commissioned to oversee the above works on the client’s behalf.

Project Management
Property Protect can be commissioned to carry out building works on a cost plus basis. This includes for both new work and maintenance work.
